Overview
Build the essential scientific and operational foundations required for safe and effective exercise practice.
The Foundations of Exercise Testing and Operations micro credential equips learners with the knowledge and practical understanding required to confidently perform pre-exercise screening, conduct health-related fitness assessments, and understand the scientific principles that underpin human movement. Learners will also develop an appreciation for the operational aspects of the fitness industry, including facility management and risk management, ensuring safe and professional practice.
Whether you are beginning your journey in the exercise and wellness industry or looking to refresh your foundational knowledge, this course provides an evidence-based introduction to the core concepts that support effective exercise testing and client care.
Throughout this course you’ll gain insights into:
- Human anatomy and its application to exercise and movement.
- Fundamental biomechanical principles which influence movement efficiency and performance.
- Pre-exercise screening and client risk stratification.
- Health-related fitness testing protocols and interpretation.
- Principles of facility management and professional practice.
- Risk management strategies for exercise environments.
Develop the confidence to build safe, evidence-informed exercise practices from the ground up.
This course is perfect for....
- Aspiring fitness professionals and personal trainers.
- Exercise and wellness practitioners starting their careers.
- Sports and strength and conditioning coaches seeking stronger scientific foundations.
- Healthcare professionals wishing to refresh their foundational knowledge.
- Individuals interested in pursuing further studies in sport, exercise science or rehabilitation.
What's in Store for You?
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Explain the principles of health, safety, security and risk management in a fitness facility, including the relevant legislative requirements and organisational policies and procedures.
- Identify potential hazards within a fitness facility and implement appropriate safety, security, emergency and evacuation procedures to minimise risk.
- Interpret facility layouts, emergency plans, safety signage and fire-fighting equipment, and explain their purpose and maintenance requirements.
- Identify the different types of fitness equipment and demonstrate an understanding of their purpose, operation, maintenance, servicing, storage and preventative care requirements.
- Develop and implement maintenance plans and record-keeping systems for fitness facilities and equipment, including the management of service and maintenance documentation.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of facility safety, security and maintenance practices, and make recommendations for continuous improvement and support requirements.
Risk Management
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Develop and implement risk management and safety promotion strategies to maximise safety and reduce risk in physical activity and sport environments.
- Conduct risk assessments of sports and physical activity environments and implement appropriate safety monitoring procedures, including equipment and facility inspections.
- Develop and implement emergency action plans (EAPs) and procedures for medical emergencies, injuries, and infectious disease management in sport and physical activity settings.
- Apply principles of injury prevention by identifying risk factors, hazardous environments, common injuries and appropriate preventative strategies.
- Promote safe and healthy participation through participant education, health promotion initiatives and effective communication of health-related information.
- Monitor and evaluate participant responses to exercise, fatigue and stress, and implement appropriate strategies to support safe participation and performance.
Exercise Anatomy
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Describe the anatomical structures and systems of the human body.
- Explain the composition of muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons.
- Identify structures and locations of the human body.
- Discuss the functions of anatomical systems.
Biomechanics of Exercise
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Conduct a biomechanical analysis of movement in sport.
- Modify forces and levers to adapt movement in sport.
- Modify muscles and joints involved in a “push-up”.
- Adapt movement based on analysis and modify movement.
- Conduct an anatomical analysis of movement in sport.
- Adapt changing range of motion or degree of movement.
- Adhere to safety principles in adapting movement.
Screening Procedures
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Collect, manage and maintain participant information using appropriate screening tools, documentation and record-keeping procedures while ensuring confidentiality and data integrity.
- Explain the purpose and application of screening questionnaires and interpret screening information to determine readiness for physical activity and identify appropriate referral or participation decisions.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills during the screening and consultation process by applying active listening, cultural sensitivity, professionalism and supportive behaviours.
- Provide participants with appropriate feedback on screening outcomes and recommendations to support informed decision-making regarding physical activity participation.
- Assist participants in establishing realistic goals and developing appropriate exercise or training plans based on their needs and screening outcomes.
Health-Related Fitness Assessments
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Prepare participants and organise fitness assessment sessions according to accepted testing protocols and safety requirements.
- Conduct anthropometric, body composition and postural assessments using accepted protocols, including the measurement of height, weight, body mass index, circumferences, skinfolds and posture.
- Conduct cardiorespiratory fitness assessments using accepted submaximal testing protocols and a range of appropriate assessment methods.
- Assess muscular fitness and flexibility using accepted testing protocols.
- Interpret and integrate fitness assessment data to evaluate a participant's health and fitness status.
- Communicate assessment procedures, results and recommendations to participants in a clear and professional manner.
Assessments
There will be a set of questions following each chapter in the six modules. The pass mark for each set is 80%. You have multiple attempts to achieve this mark.
A certificate of completion will be issued once all of the questions have been completed.
